Azure compute reservation exchanges extended until further notice

by | May 29, 2024

Clients can benefit from more flexibility and savings on Azure compute services

Azure compute reservation exchanges, which allow Clients to exchange their compute reservations for different instance series and regions, have been extended until further notice. This announcement applies to Azure Virtual Machine (VM), Azure Dedicated Host, and Azure App Service reservations.

The grace period for Azure compute reservation exchanges was initially set to end on July 1, 2024, but it has been extended to give Clients more time to assess their resource needs and plan accordingly. Clients can continue to exchange their compute reservations during this time, and any compute reservations purchased during this extended grace period will retain the right to one more exchange after the grace period ends.

Azure compute reservation exchanges are a feature that enables Clients to optimize their compute spending and usage by swapping their reservations for different instance series and regions, without any fees or penalties. For example, a client who has a reservation for a D-series VM in West US can exchange it for an E-series VM in East US, or vice versa, depending on their workload requirements.

The extension of Azure compute reservation exchanges is related to the launch of the Azure savings plan for compute, which was introduced in October 2022. The Azure savings plan for compute is a new way to save on consistent spend across different compute services, regardless of region. With the savings plan, Clients can commit to a certain amount of compute usage per hour for a one-year or three-year term and get discounts of up to 60 percent on eligible compute services.

With the savings plan’s automatic flexibility, the reservation exchange policy has been updated. While instance size flexibility for VMs remains post-grace period, exchanges of instance series or regions for Azure VM, Azure Dedicated Host, and Azure App Service reservations will no longer be supported. Clients who want to benefit from the savings plan’s flexibility can trade in their Azure compute reservations for a savings plan or continue to use and purchase reservations for those predictable, stable workloads where the specific configuration need is known.
